KHL Brawl Racks Up 691 Penalty Minutes - Game Cancelled!

Is the KHL a Professional Hockey League?  It'sdifficult to classify the individuals as "professionals" after their involvement in the recent brawl between two KHL teams - Vityaz Chekhov and Avangard Omsk.  The brawl occurred after just 3:39 minutes of play in the FIRST PERIOD.  Can we take this league seriously?  If you are looking for a circus to erupt during a hockey game then grab your tickets and enjoy the show.  I guess this league will do anything to get people to come to their games.  The brawl included former NHL star Jaromir Jagr and 30 other players.  Jagr received a 2-2-10-10 minutes worth of penalties for his actions in the brawl.  Anton Babchuk - former Carolina Hurricane defenseman was one a several players to jump off the bench to partake in the festival of fistacuffs.

League officials are meeting Sunday to discuss disciplinary actions.  KHL President and IIHF Council Member Alexander Medvedev issued this statement on Saturday in reaction to the game:

“We are aware of what happened in Chekhov. But it is too early to draw any conclusions. We don't know everything, although it is obvious that it is wrong to fight in pre-game warm ups. Nevertheless, we have to study the video footage, listen to representatives of both sides, and only after that should we come to an informed decision"

As an avid hockey fan and follower of all things hockey, I would find it very difficult to make the 1977 classic hockey movie Slapshot appear as a Disney Movie, but, after watching the latest YouTube clip of the KHL Brawl that is exactly what it does.  Slapshot  is simply a feel good movie when comparing it to the 691 penalty minutes displayed on You Tube.

Thanks to the KHL for putting another black mark on fighting's involvement in hockey.

Cheers,
Canucks with Pucks
