Recently, I came across a very unique and interesting approach to how some fantasy leagues conduct their draft lottery to determine who selects 1st overall. This new approach might be something fun to implement into our league in the upcoming years.
Currently, our league gives the bottom 3 teams a chance to move up to select 1st overall and we use the following percentages:
- 20th Place - 60% chance of selecting 1st Overall
- 19th Place - 30% chance of selecting 1st Overall
- 18th Place - 10% chance of selecting 1st Overall
How it Could Work
- The Bottom Five Teams (16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th Placed Teams) would be eligible to move up to select 1st overall.
- I will use this past season's finish for an example only.
- Each season the bottom 5 teams in the NHL have a chance of selecting 1st overall in the NHL Entry Draft and are entered into the NHL Lottery for a chance to win.
- Teams 16-20th would be assigned an NHL team that finished in the respective position
- 20th Burnsy = 30th Edmonton Oilers (same chance of selecting 1st)
- 19th Homer = 29th Boston Bruins (via Toronto)
- 18th Bubba (via Irwin) = 28th Florida Panthers
- 17th Eppy = 27th Columbus Blue Jackets
- 16th Boltsy = 26th New York Islanders
- In essence this Lottery Draft would be very easily conducted as all we need to do is assign the bottom 5 teams the respective Bottom 5 NHL Teams each year and then whatever the outcome of the actual NHL Lottery Draft (always televised on TSN) would be the outcome of our pool's Lottery Draft
Here's how the actual NHL Draft Lottery operates:
Below are the chances of each of the bottom 5 teams in the 2010 NHL Draft Lottery this past season. Each year, only 5 NHL teams have the chance to move up to select 1st. The remaining 8 non-playoff teams can move up in the draft but not far enough to select 1st. For our purposes we would not include the remaining 8 non-playoff teams.
Edmonton Oilers (48.2% chance of selecting first)
Toronto (traded to Boston) (18.8% chance of selecting first)
Florida Panthers(14.2% chance of selecting first)
Columbus Blue Jackets (10.7% chance of selecting first)
New York Islanders (8.1% chance of selecting first)
I thought this format was definitely interesting, easy to implement (easier than what it sounds) and gives us a great chance at getting together to watch the NHL Draft Lottery and have some beers to see who wins our lottery too. The past 3 years we have performed the draft lottery each July at the Threshing Fest Parade and with Bubba moving we could try a new tradition.
These are just my thoughts, I am comfortable staying with the same format but if we wanted to try this new way then it would definitely be easy and fun.
I will add a poll to the website for everyone to place a vote to see if there is an interest. We can discuss it further at this season's draft day as it's not a pressing issue.
